"No, your eyes do not deceive you, that really is a humongous hippo bobbing along the Thames"
Casually strolling along the Thames, when, low and behold, you see a giant Hippopotamus sculpture in the River!

As part of the ‘Totally Thames Festival’, the Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman has created this magnificent ‘creature.’ Mr Hofman is well known for his over-sized animal creations, like his giant rubber duck:
The artist claims that he decided upon a Hippopotamus to create conversation between people, and believe me, it definitely worked in my case! I cannot honestly recall the number of different people I’ve spoken with about this sculpture; both questions and casual conversations regarding its size, location, origin … (by the way it’s by St George’s Wharf in Vauxhall until the end of September)
It is just one of the many fantastic things put on in London for people to go and see, for free. Somewhere to venture to on an evening after work or a sunny Sunday afternoon and spend 5 or 10 minutes wondering why there is a giant Hippopotamus floating in the River Thames.
And for those of you who are going to go slightly mad wondering why Mr Hofman chose a Hippo; he says that there used to be Hippos along the Thames ;-)
